Oakland Magazine has named this year’s Best of the Bay and Montclair Veterinary Hospital won for Best Veterinary Clinic! Thank you all so much for your support and votes. Our friends at Redhound earned the Best Pet Shop, so we would like to send out a congratulations to them as well! It is thanks to the support of our community that we are able to earn these awards, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Baby Raccoons

Spring is a busy time for Wildlife Rescue, since this is when we see the highest number of orphaned animals. On May 15^th, Oakland Animal Services brought in three baby raccoons that had been abandoned in an attic off of Park Boulevard. With their eyes still closed, they were estimated to be only three to four weeks old. Dehydration is often an issue for orphaned raccoons, so Courtney and Simon gave them fluids during their brief stay at MVH. Because raccoons of this age require a very specific diet, they were promptly picked up by Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Center. Orphaned raccoons do best when raised alongside their siblings, so we’re hopeful that they have a long life ahead of them.

Gopher Snake

Gopher snakes are commonly found in a large variety of habitats, and our most recent visitor was picked up from the Oakland Chinatown Library! These snakes are slow-movers that gravitate towards crevices and burrows, which probably made the library an attractive location for this city-dwelling snake. Oakland Animal Services brought him into the hospital, and a routine exam was performed by Dr. Cynthia Lynn and Shemira. During his stay at the hospital, he coiled himself up and vibrated his tail just like a rattlesnake; this is typical behavior for gopher snakes when they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. After declaring him to be in good health, he was transferred to Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue Center where he will be released back into the wild.

Congratulations to 2009 Montclair Pet Mayor LIttle Bear!

Congratulations to Little Bear and local sponsors Montclair Women’s Cultural Arts Club & Crogan’s Restaurant for a wonderfully successful campaign!

Little Bear raised $5,898.16 to help pets and wildlife in need, with the grand total this year clocking in at a very impressive $19,637.16.

Pet Mayor Festivities Thursdays at Montclair Bistro

For the next three Thursdays (June 4, 11, 18), come out to Montclair Bistro between 6-9 p.m. for Pet Mayor Contest-related festivities.

There will be areas to vote for your favorite candidates (and meet some of the Pet Mayor Contest Final 8!), a guest bartender and lots of fun for everyone.

A portion of the proceeds and all tips (as well as all voting donations) benefit the nonprofit Montclair Veterinary Hospital Pet & Wildlife Fund.
